An inner city gem, revitalized through restoration, undertaken with love.

When Living Room Realty decided to move into the run down building that formerly housed the Department of Community Justice, a few eyebrows rose. Wrapped in razor wire, vacant for a number of years, the building was intimidating. Designed by notable PNW modernist architects John W. Reese and Frank E. Blachly, the building was worth saving, even though it had been stripped of most of its architectural character - save a few key elements. Inspired by how it could transform, given time and attention, the clients decided to undergo the task of working with the appropriate committees to get the building on the National Historic Registry. They engaged the services of S. Baird Design to ensure the updated design maintained the historic integrity of the building. They design team helped oversee all aspects of the remodel from space planning and construction through to furnishings, landscape and lighting.

“The building's original intent was to be of service and inspire it's members of the Postal Workers Credit Union and those of the community. We wanted our design to be emblematic of that purpose, to pay homage to the 1960’s era in which it was built. By reviewing the historic plans to inform our newer aspects of the remodel, as well as understanding the inner workings of Living Room Realty, we aimed to strike a harmonious balance of old and new within the building. Our strongest desire is for this renovation to inspire. To feel like it has always been and yet, what it needed to become. -Shannon Baird ”
