RULES OF THE RUG

There’s a kind of magic in choosing the right rug. It’s one of our favorite parts of the sourcing process—not just because of the textures, colors, or the thrill of the hunt, but because a rug has the power to anchor a space in both energy and design. The right rug grounds a room, harmonizes the furniture, and sets the tone from the ground up.

Whether you're designing a space for yourself, styling for a client, or just dreaming about your next home refresh, this soulful, story-driven rug shopping guide will help you find a rug that feels just right.

1. Start With Size

One of the most common rug mistakes is choosing something too small. The golden rule of any good rug size guide? Big rooms need big rugs. You want your rug to extend far enough to create a visual container for your furniture—like drawing a soft, grounding circle around the gathering space.

Tip: In living rooms, make sure at least the front legs of your furniture rest on the rug. For dining rooms, the rug should extend far enough that chairs stay on it when pulled out.

2. Choose the Best Rug Materials for Your Lifestyle

Rug "content" (what it’s made from) affects not just the look and feel, but also the durability and environmental impact of your piece.

  • Wool rugs are a timeless favorite—soft, strong, and naturally stain-resistant.

  • Jute and sisal rugs add texture and wear beautifully in high-traffic areas.

  • Silk rugs are a luxurious choice for low-traffic, quiet spaces.

  • Synthetic rugs are often budget-friendly, but many are made from plastics. They can off-gas and wear poorly over time—not our favorite option.

Sustainability Note: If you're shopping with the planet in mind, eco-friendly rugs made from natural materials (or better yet, vintage rugs) are your best bet.

3. Consider Cost & Intention

Before you invest, ask yourself: is this a forever piece, or just for a season or specific space—like a nursery, a rental, or a transitional home?

Designer Tip: Layering flatweave rugs is a beautiful way to add dimension without committing to a large investment piece.

4. Use a Rug Pad

We say it all the time: don’t skip the rug pad! It keeps your rug in place, adds softness underfoot, and significantly extends the life of your rug. Think of it as an invisible layer of care and comfort.
