‘everything happens in the kitchen, life happens in the kitchen’ - andrew zimmern

Countertops are the most important surface in the kitchen. Used for baking, cooking, cleaning, prepping, wrapping gifts, doing homework, eating meals, serving as a makeshift standing desk and the occasional elevated seat. Countertops are a big part of the aesthetic as it sets the tone in a room. The consideration of Form + Function can not be understated. Below are a roundup of our favorite countertop materials.

#1 Concrete

Can someone say “sexy”? Industrial, tactile, typically uniform in appearance (initially), concrete countertops are a beautiful choice for those seeking killer aesthetics. Be forewarned - while structurally sounds, they are quite porous and can etch easily. Concrete counters need regular maintenance and spills should be tended to quickly.

#2 Butcher Block

By far the most organic of the options, Butcher Block countertops add a natural warmth and interesting grain pattern to any kitchen. We love the organic look and feel but these counters are not for the faint of heart. They can stain easily (wine, food, oils) and will need to be sanded and oiled regularly. Another area where wood countertops underperform is around sinks - too much water can cause some of the better worn tops to

#3 Soapstone

A material that has been used in homes, science labs and professional kitchens for centuries, Soapstone is a natural quarried stone that does not stain, is heat resistant and can stand-up to acidic materials. It ranges in tone from inky blacks to deep black-green, to slate greys; all depending on which quarry it is sourced from. Some slabs can have striking veining while others are more monotone in design. One thing to note is that it is extremely soft, so will show scratches, nicks and dings with age. Some fans believe this creates a lovely patina - a story of use. For those that need the precision of an unblemished surface - steer clear from Soapstone.

#4 Solid Surface - Caesarstone/Quartz/Etc

A great option for a neutral and well performing countertop, we like to use Solid Surfaces in various projects and styles - from bungalows to new construction. When selected in a monotone color, it has the ability to let the other features of the kitchen shine - from an interesting tile to a beautifully painted or stained cabinet. Available in various thicknesses, sheens and edge profiles our favorite configuration is a 2cm with a matte/leathered/low sheen finish with a square profile on the edge.

#5 Stainless Steel

Generally thought of for commercial kitchens, we adore a stainless steel counter in just the right home. A workhorse material, sleek surface and streamlined: stainless steel countertops can be custom fabricated for a seamless design. Integrated backsplashes sinks or aprons, it is a fantastic option for a modernized space, a eclectic remodel or an industrial-cool space.
